Szachownica refuge is one of the longest cave systems on Krakowsko-Wilunska Upland. The refuge is the second place in relation to number of bats' hibernation in Poland. Every year over 1000 bats hibernate here. There are 10 species of that animals with so rare species like Bechstein's bat and pond bat. Szachownica is a Site of Community Importance within European Network Natura 2000. Szachonica refuge is located in the middle part of Wileunska Upland (slaskie voivodeship), on Krzemienna mountain (227 m a.s.l.), which is situated about 4.5 km to the north of Lipie village. more »
The best way to get to the refuge is from Parzymiechy-Lipie road. Going from Lipie you have to turn right into byroad and Arrive to Rozalin village. more »
