Wyzyna Slasko-Krakowska
About the region
Wyzyna Slasko-Krakowska (Slasko-Krakowska Highland) is located in the north-western part of Malopolska (Lesser Poland) and covers the area of 7535 sq km. It is a flat plateaux cut through by deep river valleys in form of ravines. The landscape was formed by the long term water erosion, which resulted in the creation of many karst formations. A complex of Jura Landscape Parks located on the total area of 37 thousand sq km has been formed in order to protect the environmental values of this region. The most precious part of the province is protected within the borders of Ojcowski National Park.

The Slasko-Krakowska Highland can be divided into three macroregions: Wyzyna Slaska, Wyzyna Woznicko-Wielunska  and Wyzyna Krakowsko-Czestochowska.

Wyzyna Slaska (Silesian Highland) covers the area of 1181 sq km. The highland is covered by postglacial sediments, mostly sands. The rainfall in this area is relatively high (700-800 mm per year). The climate of the Upper Silesia region has been greatly changed by the human influence. The environment is less degraded in the northern part of the Silesian Highland. There is a landscape park and a couple of nature reserves located in this region.

A watershed dividing the river basins of Odra and Wisla rivers runs through this province. A river network is very thin and rivers are polluted. A large part of the region is being supplied in water from the Goczalkowicki Reservoir. The river Biala Przemsza runs through the Bledowska Desert – a largest field of loose sands in Europe. The desert is being overgrown due to the introduction of dune plants like e.g. holly.

This province is a biggest urban area in Poland. The air is highly polluted which results in the decrease of sunlight intensity and the increase of cloudiness.

Silesian Highland is also the most industrialized region in Poland. It is connected with a high concentrations of natural resources (mostly charcoal) in this region. Besides the charcoal mines, until quite recently there were also numerous zinc, lead (Olkusz, Jaworzno) and iron mines (Czestochowa) in this area.

Wyzyna Woznicko-Wielunska covers the area of 3739 sq km. The soil basis consists of rocks originating from Trias and Jura covered by Tertiary sediments, which form small morainic hills. This province can be divided into 5 mezoregions: Wyzyna Wielunska, Obnizenie Liswarty-Prosny, Prog Woznicki, Prog Herbski i Obnizenie Gornej Warty.

Wyzyna Krakowsko-Czestochowska (Jura Krakowsko-Czestochowska) is located in the eastern part of the Slasko-Krakowska Highland that covers the area of 2615 sq km. It is an 80 km long belt, where hills formed from limestones reach 300-500 m asl. Many rivers have their sources on this highland: Warta, Biala Przemsza, Pilica, Dlubnia, Szreniawa, Pradnik, Wiercica.
