Puszcza Knyszynska is one of not many wood areas in Poland, which - although strongly fragmented - still has many features of natural forest. It used to be one unit with Bialowieska and Augustowska Forests. Puszcza Knyszynska is birds' refuge of European range. There has been at least 38 species of breeding birds stated on its area, mentioned in Appendix I of Birds Directive. The refuge of Puszcza Knyszynska is located in podlaskie voivodeship on areas of bialostocki, sokolski and moniecki counties. It encompasses area of Puszcza Knyszynska, situated on Bialostocka Plateau, to the north and west from Bialystok city. The Biebrza National Park was established in 1993. Total area of 59 233 ha makes it the largest of Polish national parks. The famous Biebrza marshes are the most valuable habitats of the park.
