The Stołowe Mountains are the only mountains in Poland presenting a plated structure with extremely interesting relief. They are built of the youngest, in the Middle Sudety basin, upper Cretaceous cracked sandstones and marls. They are one of the longer mountain ranges in Sudety, spreading for 42 km along the valley of Bystrzyca Dusznicka river from Mieroszow to Krzeszow. The area is extremely varied in terms of habitats - there exist as many as 16 habitat types valuable for the European nature. The Karkonosze National Park was established in 1959 to include an area of 5,510 ha. Since 1992 the Karkonosze National Park has been included into the Bilateral Biosphere Reserve Karkonosze/Krkonoše (MaB) which covers over 60,000 ha.
