The site encompasses the valley of one of the biggest Polish rivers - Bug. Along the whole fragment the river has a natural character with numerous meanders and oxbow lakes. The river valley is covered by meadows, locally some patches of degraded riverside forests, willow shrubs and arable land occur. The site is home for both forest birds and birds of the open landscape. The site lies in Lublin voivodeship, within the districts of Biala Podlaska, Chelm, Hrubieszow and Wlodawa. It is a fragment of Polesie region. Near the village of Matcze - the site borders with another Natura 2000 site Lasy Strzeleckie. Bug - one of the biggest Polish riverso has its sources in Gologory in Ukraine. At first in flows in south-east direction, but in Golebie it turns north toward Terespol. This fragment of Bug is a border river between Poland and Ukraine, and then with Belorus. The site is very long and it is difficult to explore as a whole. Polesie National Park lies in central Poland near its eastern border. It was established in 1990 on the basis of the existing peatbogs nature reserves: Durne Bagno, Jezioro Moszne, Jezioro Dlugie, Torfowisko Orlowskie.
There are 182 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 13 species of amphibians and 6 species of reptiles (including rare European pond terrapin) in the Poleski National Park.
