The characteristic features of this region's landscape are its flatness, gentle slopes and large areas covered by swamps. This province begins in Poland and expands eastward beyond the Dniepr river. The western part of the region belongs to the river basin of Bug and Wisla rivers.
The region can be divided into 7 macroregions located within the Polish, Belarussian and Ukrainian borders: Western Polesie, Eastern Polesie, Polesie Wolynskie, Polesie Zytomierskie, Polesie Kijowskie, Polesie Czernichowskie, Polesie Nowogrodzko-Siewierskie. Only parts of two regions can be found within the Polish borders: Western Polesie and Polesie Wolynskie. Both of this provinces occupy the area of 6,8 thousand sq km.
Polesie Zachodnie (Western Polesie) is located on both sides of the Bug river and in the river basin of upper Prypec river. This province occupies the area of 4,7 thousand sq km within Polish borders. This area is mostly covered by plains and partially by swamps. Lakes are located in the southern part of the region. This region is divided into 6 mezoregions: Zakleslosc Lomaska, Rownina Kodenska, Rownina Parczewska, Zakleslosc Sosnowiecka, Garb Wlodawski and Rownina Leczynsko-Wlodawska.
Zakleslosc Lomaska (Lomaska Depression) covers the area of 800 sq km. This province is covered by forests and meadows with patches of swamps and peatbogs and is devoid of cities. There are two nature reserves located on this area.
Rownina Kodenska (Kodenska Plain) stretches across an area of 930 sq km. It is a region covered by forests, with a low population density a devoid of cities. There is one natural reserve in this province.
Rownina Parczewska (Parczewska Plan) covers the area of 750 sq km. Landscape is characterised by flat elevations and sandy depressions. This area is more densely populated. There are also some small towns with industry centres located in this province.
Zaklesłosc Sosnowiecka (Sosnowiecka Depression) occupies the area of 500 sq km. This province is located on the height of 150-160 m asl and is covered mostly by meadows and riparian forests cut through by drainage ditches. Population density is low and there are no towns or railroads located in this area. Four nature reserves can be found in this region.
Garb Wlodawski covers the area of 350 sq km. It is a flat elevation with the highest point reaching 212 m asl. This province is covered by forests with small number of villages. The biggest town in this region is Wlodawa (15 thousand citizens).
Rownina Łeczynsko-Wlodawska covers the area of 1315 sq km. There are numerous swamps and peat bogs as well as numerous small lakes located in this area. Poleski National Park, two landscape parks and a couple nature reserves can be found in this province. The only town in this area is Ostrow Lubelski (2,5 thousand citizens).
Polesie Wołynskie covers the area of around 2,1 thousand sq km within Polish boundaries. A characteristic landscape feature of this region are relatively high elevations composed out of rocks originating from Cretaceous period (marls) and Tertiary period (sandstones). There are 3 landscape parks and 12 nature reserves located within the boundaries of this region. This province can be divided into 3 mezoregions: Obnizenie Dorhuckie, Pagory Chelmskie and Obnizenie Dubienki.
Obnizenie Dorhuckie (Dorhucka Depression) is a triangle shaped plain stretching across the area of 430 sq km. This province has a transitional character. It has features found in Polesie (plains, swamps, meadows and elevations below 200 m asl) as well as those found on highlands (geological structure, karst formations and location in the neighbourhood of higher regions).
Pagory Chelmskie (Chelmskie Hills) are elevations reaching 274 m asl, but they are not forming a highland. The depressions between the hills are filled with sands or swamps. This province covers the area of 720 sq km. Two nature reserves with steppe vegetation can be found here.
Obnizenie Dubienki (Dubienki Depression) covers the area of 950 sq km. This area is covered by vast forests and meadows. Two landscape parks and a couple of nature reserves can be found in this province.
