Apart from a dense complex of Puszcza Piska the refuge consists of many lakes, including the biggest in Poland - the Sniardwy Lake, as well as farmlands and meadows. Area of Puszcza Piska is a Special Protection Area of European Importance. At least 37 species from Appendix I of the Birds Directive and 12 species featured in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals occur here. Area of the refuge is characterized by high forestation due to a presence of dense forest complex of Puszcza Piska.
