Apart from a dense complex of Puszcza Piska the refuge consists of many lakes, including the biggest in Poland - the Sniardwy Lake, as well as farmlands and meadows. Area of Puszcza Piska is a Special Protection Area of European Importance. At least 37 species from Appendix I of the Birds Directive and 12 species featured in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals occur here. Area of the refuge is characterized by high forestation due to a presence of dense forest complex of Puszcza Piska. Nature conservation is the main goal of the Park. Works aiming at preservation of the existing nature condition are being conducted in areas covered by partial conservation.
At the beginning of 1998 the Romincka Primeval Forest Landscape Park was set up to protect the Romincka Primeval Forest and adjacent parts containing the total area of 14,620 ha.
