Ostoja Wigierska
Wigry Lake, located in Augustowska Forest, is one of the biggest and deepest lakes in Poland. Wigry together with Czarna Hancza constitute ecosystems including varied habitats of different water organisms. Etymology of the name of the lake is not clearly known. It is believed that the name of the lake comes from an old word "wingris" which in its origin meant crooked., winding. This was related to irregular coastline ad the shape of the lake itself. The landscape was created by the Scandinavian continental glacier. Within the following processes of recession and transgression of the glacier the characteristic forms of land profile were shaped. more »
