The biggest natural value of the refuge is significant diversity of habitats. There are 10 different types of habitats especially important for parts of preserving the parts of European nature. Great value is numerous population of mussel Unio crassus in the Potegowskie lakes. The area of the refuge is mainly occupied by mixed forests, the coniferous and deciduous ones overgrown much smaller surfaces. Postglacial landscape has been created after the Baltic glaciation. Bory Tucholskie National Park was established in 1996, on the area of 4,789 ha. The Park is located in the central-north part of Poland within the Polish largest forest complex - Bory Tucholskie.
The Old-Yews Nature Park in Wierzchlas was named in the honor of Leon Wyczolkowski (1852-1936), the eminent Polish painter, who created more than 100 pieces of work there.
