The Breeding Centre of European Bison was established before WW II in Poszyna, located in the central part of Niepolomicka Primeval Forest. The first couple of animals was brought there from Bialowieza.

At the beginning it was open for visitors and special observation tower was erected for tourists. However, in 1954 due to the epidemics of foot-and-mouth disease, a highly contagious and sometimes fatal viral disease of cattle and pigs, the centre was closed for visitors, and never re-opened. Nowadays, on the area of 60 ha there lives 30 European bison.
