Zatoka Pomorska is a refuge established to protect winter areas of birds. It protects a place of very large winter concentrations of water birds, coming to this part of the Baltic Sea from the north. Number of birds changes depending on weather conditions. During frosty winters gatherings of birds may reach hundreds of thousands specimens and last until spring. The refuge encompasses a fragment of Polish territorial sea waters (Polish economic zone). Zatoka Pomorska is a large coastal reservoir of the Baltic Sea divided by the Polish-German border. The central part of the refuge is occupied by a shoal called Lawica Odrzana (the Odra Bank), where the sea is locally very shallow, with depth of only 8 meters. more »
