The best way to get to the southern part of the refuge is by train going from Gdansk to Braniewo. You can also get here by car or PKS coach, since Elblag - the biggest city in the area - lies by the international road E77 and national road no. 22.
Elblag and Braniewo offer a well organized accommodation base. Eastern and northern parts of Zalew can be reached from Gdansk by road no.501 going along Mierzeja Wislana to Krynica Morska and Piaski.
Since Zalew Wislany is a large reservoir every year it attracts many water sports lovers. The Baltic shipping offers pleasure boat cruisers through Zalew Wislany: Elblag-Krynica Morska and Frombork-Krynica Morska and cruises from Frombork and Krynica Morska.
The greatest number of water birds can be observed on the waters of Zalew Wislany in autumn, since September to December. If the Zalew is not covered by ice, wintering birds can stay here until March or April. In order to observe birds on the water one needs good binonculars or a telescope on a tripod.
