The estuary of the biggest Polish river – Vistula is and important breeding area for birds dependent on beach habitat, and a mainstay for many species of migrant birds. Over 250 bird species were observed in the vicinity of Vistula’s mouth, 61 of them are breeding species, and over 40 out of the observed bird species are rare or very rare in Poland. Ujscie Wisły is a Special Protection Areas. In 1991 the nature reserve "Mewia Lacha" (131,5 ha) was established in the mouth of Vistula river. The main aim of the reserve is to protect the newly shaped sandy parts of the mouth, where terns and plovers breed regularly. From 15 April until 15 August, in the nesting and breeding seasons, the entry to the reserve is forbidden. more »

Hel Marine Station was established in 1992. Its biggest attraction is the aquarium for seals, where gray seals, the biggest seals living in the Baltic Sea, may be seen all year round.
