Location
Przymorskie Blota refuge is a part of nature of Pomeranian and West-Pomeranian voivodships, near Ustka. Area of the refuge also encompasses Jezioro Modla (the Modla Lake). The whole site covers the area of 15.9 km².
Jezioro Modla
The important element of Przymorskie Blota is Jezioro Modla nature reserve. The lake lies 2 km from Duninow and about 2-3 km from the seashore. The reserve encompasses the lake with adjoining waste lands, covering the area of 194.80 ha. Here occur communities of water and rush vegetation, typical for shallow, overgrowing seaside lake. The site is also a valuable breeding area for water and marsh birds.
Ecosystem
Most of the refuge area is overgrown with meadow and scrub habitats which cover about 65% of the area. Significant parts are also occupied by deciduous and mixed forests, to a lesser extent by typical coniferous forests. Valuable communities of the area include peatbogs, swamps, bogs. A variety to ecosystem types are stagnant and running waters. The site is unique due to occurrence of the following habitats:
Flora and fauna
Within the area of Przymorskie Blota occurs sweetgale. Until recently this plant had been growing in large clusters, now it is rare. Sweetgale is typical for Atlantic, warm coasts. Other important plants in the area are marsh pea and bogbean. Marsh pea is a low green perennial with crawling or climbing stem, which blooms from June to August. The flowers are blue-violet. It grows on wet meadows. Bogbean is characteristic for marshy, peaty meadows. It is considered to be a medicinal plant. It blooms in May.
The most valuable specimen of local fauna are birds which nest around Jezioro Modla. Here one can meet black-headed gull, common gull, mute swan, black-tailed godwit, penduline tit, marsh harrier, Montagu's harrier, bittern and fieldfare.
Threats and protection
The biggest threat to the area comes from drainage of marshes, pollution of waters which leads to their eutrophication and overgrowing of meadow stands by rushes.
