Area description
Orle refuge is located in pomorskie voivodeship not far from the town of Wejherowo. It covers the area of 2,6 km2. The site is a fragment of meadow-fen complex formed on the largest in Poland deposits of postglacial, lacustrine calcareous deposits (thickness 6.7 m) covering the Reda River Pravalley.

The share of CaCO3 in the deposits exceeds 50%. Peat 1.5 m thick occurs in upper part of lithostratygraphical profile. Non-forest communities, mostly meadow ones, dominate in vegetation.

Habitat types existing in the area:

  • Alkaline fens
  • Transition mires and quaking bogs
  • Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clavey-silt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae)

The area lies in the Area of Protected Landscape of Pradolina Redy-Leby (18 933.5 ha; 1994). Part of the area is protected as a site of ecological interest (Pryzniewska Meadow; 3.6 ha). Designation of the Orle nature reserve is projected. The area is also a part of the Promotional Forest Complex of Lasy Oliwsko-Darzlubskie (43171.97 ha).
