English name:
The Sarbska Sand Bar
Location
The refuge lies within Wybrzeze Slowinskie (the Slowinskie Coast) which is a part of Pobrzeze Koszalinskie (the Koszalin Shoreland). It is situated a few kilometers eastward from Leba and encompasses a narrow sand bar which separates Jezioro Sarbskie (the Sarbsko Lake) from the Baltic Sea as well as a part of seaside marshes located east off the lake.
History and the landscape
The most characteristic element of landscape is a complex of rampart and parabolic dunes, as well as sandy beaches. The vast majority of the area is overgrown by forests.
Ecosystem
The most valuable element of the refuge are rampart and parabolic dunes - extremely rare on Polish coast. Together with adjoining beaches these habitats cover about 16% of the refuge's area. The vast majority of the area, more than 80%, is overgrown by forests, almost entirely coniferous. The dominating community is Baltic dune Scots pine woods with such species as: dwarf rattlesnake plantain, heart-leaved twayblade, one flowered wintergreen. Winds blowing from the sea create specific forms of trees with unsymmetrical composition of branches. Deciduous forests occupy only 3% of the area and are represented by alder swamps and marsh birchwoods.
Depressions between dunes are filled with peat. Here we can find am extremely rare type of habitat - declacified fixed dunes with Empertum nigrum and cross-leaved heath. Also worth noticing are scrubs, with gale - endangered in Poland.
Animal world is represented by rare and protected species. One can find here white-tailed eagle and osprey, and at night you can hear eagle-owl - the biggest Polish owl.
Threats
Among the biggest threats are trampling on dunes and seasonal fires.
Nature protection
Mierzeja Sarbska constitutes a part of Nadmorski Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu (the Coastal Area of Protected Landscape). It encompases "Mierzeja Sarbska" nature reserve, which protects dune and marsh vegetation.
