Lawica Slupska is located on the open waters of the Baltic Sea about 25 nautical miles north off Ustka. Due to low depth of the sea (in the shallowest places about 8 meters no shipping lanes go through ) through Lawica Slupska and the waters are not much exploited by the fishing industry.
The refuge is a wintering place for many species of birds. If the necessary precautions are kept the naturalists can observe and count them.

Hel Marine Station was established in 1992. Its biggest attraction is the aquarium for seals, where gray seals, the biggest seals living in the Baltic Sea, may be seen all year round.
