The area is dominated by meadow complexes cut by alder-pine forests and little alder afforestations. The whole region is divided by a net of little canals and ditches.

Birds specified in 1 Appendix of the Birds Directive which occur in the area include: bittern, little bittern, great egret, whooper swan, honeybuzzard, white stork, black stork, merlin, red kite, white-tailed eagle, marsh harrier, Montagu's harrier, hen harrier, lesser spotted eagle, peregrine falcon, aquatic warbler, corn crake, crane, black tern, barnacle goose, spotted crake, little crake, Eurasian nightjar, common kingfisher, great spotted woodpecker, sky lark, ruff, wood sandpiper, barred warbler, red-breasted flycatcher, red-backed shrike.
