Location
The refuge is located on Pobrzeze Koszalinskie (the Koszalin Shoreland), between Gryfice and Karlino, to the north off Ryman, between river valleys of Molstowa, Debosznica and Blotnica.
History and lay of the land
The land formation is diverse. A plateau landscape is cut by river valleys and a gully of the Kamienica lake. Kame hills reach a relative height of 35 m and elevate over depressions filled with lakes, peat bogs and meadows. The landscape is varied by many sources, streams and cirque peat bogs.
Ecosystem
Landscape of the refuge is dominated by forests which cover over 60% of the area. These forests are mainly deciduous, but also coniferous and mixed. Depressions are occupied by bog woodlands - marshy birch groves, birch-pine forests and alluvial forests. A bit dryer habitats are overgrown with Lazulo-Fagetum oak forests with a large participation of old-growth forests, Asperulo-fagetum beech forests, Luzulo-fagetum beech forests and oak-hornbeam forests. Many trees reach here impressive sizes - oaks, beeches, lindens and hornbeams are particularly grand.
Among non-forest communities dominate meadow and rush complexes. Active raised bogs and transition mires, peat substrates of the Rhynchosporion and bogs also appear here. Forest peat substrates near the source do not occupy large area but they are well preserved and increase a natural value of the site. There are also small and scattered but well developed xeric sand calcareous grasslands.
Diversity of habitats is also high thanks to a presence of natural eutrophic lakes, in which we can observe floating plants, such as yellow and white water lilies. Variety of habitats creates perfect conditions for many plants and animals. There are quite a few rare and protected species, such as: wild rosemary, round leaf sundew, deer fern, spotted orchid, greater butterfly-orchid and honeysuckle which occur here in large concentrations. Rare species of birds, like lesser spotted eagle and red kite.
Threats
On large area still exists old drainage system, which does not serve its purpose - during deficiency water is not kept in environment. In forests peat bogs still bear signs of old drainages. Decline of pasturage has caused secondary succession and overgrowing of open spaces.
Moreover, there has been a discussion about damming up waters of the Blotnica river and raising level of water in the Kamienica lake.
Nature Protection
The refuge is a Site Of Community Importance included into Natura 2000 network.
