Reservoirs which lie on area of the refuge are surrounded be extensively exploited meadows and carbonate peat bogs in the south-west. We can find alder swamp forest in the east. Jezioro Miediwe is the lowest located lake in Poland. It is a reservoir of drinking water for Szczecin. It is also used for fishing.
Among species specified in II Appendix of the Birds Directive 25 occur on area of the refuge. These are: aquatic warbler, kingfisher, lesser spotted eagle, bittern, black tern, white stork, marsh harrier, hen harrier, Montagu's harrier, corn crake, whooper swan, crane, ortolan buntig, white-tailed eagle, red-backed shrike, black kite, red kite, honey-buzzard, ruff, golden plover, little crake, spotted crake, barred warbler, wood sandpiper.
There is "Stary Przylep" nature reserve on area of the refuge.
