Hel Marine Station was established in 1992. Its biggest attraction is the aquarium for seals, where gray seals, the biggest seals living in the Baltic Sea, may be seen all year round.
Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography, University of Gdańsk is the only research center of its kind in Poland. The Station carries out scientific research of flora and fauna of the Baltic Sea, and marine environment protection.
Not only does Marine Station in Hel curries out research, but also saves lives of the endangered species, living in the Polish sea e.g. gray seals, and harbor porpoises also incorrectly (by scholarly fashion) called "the dolphin of the Baltic".
