Ornithology Institute of the Polish Academy of Science in Gdansk carry out research on the biology of birds.

At first the main activity of the institute was bird ringing. With time it has changed and research of biology and ecology of birds became the institutes priority. Nowadays, the PAN institute in Gdansk is responsible for wild birds marking in Poland.

The Institute was established in 1931 in Warsaw as the Research Station for Bird Migrations in the National Zoological Museum. In 1957 it was moved to Gorki Wschodnie on Sobieszewska island 15 kilometres from the centre of Gdansk.
