Puszcza Biala
Area description
Puszcza Biala is one of the not very numerous woods' complexes in the central part of the country, where parts of natural vegetation remain to these days. The most characteristic features of the area are: rich world of woods with poorly changed vegetation and rare in European scale freely meandering rivers: Bug and Narew with virgin shape. Puszcza Biala is a Special Protection Area within European Natura 2000 network.

Location
Puszcza Biala is one of the biggest, dense wood areas in Mazowsze region - it encompasses over 64 000 ha. It is located on Polnocnomazowiecka Lowland, in pitchfork of two picturesque rivers: Bug and Narew.

History
Puszcza Biala is also called Puszcza Biskupia (Bishop's Wood) because Konrad Mazowiecki gave these lands to bishops of Plock in the beginning of 13th century. On those most poorly settled areas of Mazowsze, bishops ran management in harmony with nature. Protection of tree stands and concern for stocks wood animals was their general rule.

Positive attitude to the nature was connected to big profits brought in by forest's produce. Bishops were managing this area with success for 600 years, so they prevent from uncontrolled and destructive settlement. Just only in 18th century in Puszcza Biala wasteful exploitation period had begun in a result of country's partition and it ended just after regaining the independence.

Flora
Forests of Puszcza Biala have economic character and most of them (about 90%) constitute pine monocultures which occur on mixed and fresh pine forest habitats. It is worth to mention that very precious, local pine ecotype occurs here which derives from primary forests of Puszcza Biala. Other types of forests occupy small area, and only fresh mixed forests among them encompass significant tenth part of the wood surface. Other broad-leaved forest: alluvial or alder appear only on nominal part of the refuge.

We can find juniper first of all in the poor brushwood, and cranberries, heather, mosses, Lycopodium and brackens make the undergrowth. It needs to be emphasise that there are 30 species of protected plants growing here and other 15 are under partial protection. The most interesting are: Betula humilis, Silene dichotoma, Martagon lily (Lilium martagon), Rue-leaved Saxifrage (Saxifraga tridactylites) and European columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris).

Fauna
The biggest richness of the refuge is world of birds. Vast wood areas ensure suitable existence conditions for: black stork which is very skittish and not numerous, few couples nest every year in Puszcza Biala. Among predator birds you can meet honey buzzard here and lesser spotted eagle in nesting season. The great curiosity is the couple of our the biggest owl nesting here - Eurasian-eagle owl. There was also nightjars' males counted by ornithologists.

Thanks to two complexes of raising ponds, situated deep into woods, we can observe four species of grebes, two colonies of grey herons and crakes: spotted and little living in cache.

There is small population of endangered black grouse on open dry areas. And there is whole range of characteristic birds on the wet sites - meadows neighbouring with river. Eurasian curlew is distinguished by its size, great snipe - by its rarity, black-tailed godwit - by its profile, and ruff - by its plumage.

Puszcza Biala is also a home for very effectively coloured Eropean roller endangered with extinction. To 10 couples of these birds nest here, what makes Puszcza Biala one of the biggest nesting place of this species in Poland.

Birds mentioned in Appendix I of Birds Directive and occurring on the are of Puszcza Biala: great and little bittern, black and white stork, honey buzzard, black kite, marsh and Montagu's harrier, lesser spotted eagle, hazel grouse, spotted, little and corn crake, common crane, ruff, great snipe, common, little and black tern, Eurasian-eagle owl, nightjars, common kingfisher, Eropean roller, black and middle spotted woodpecker, woodlark, bluethroat, barred warbler, red-backed shrike.
