Site description
The Bzura-Ner Pravalley was included into the protection program Natura 2000 because of valuable nature habitats existing in the area. Especially precious are natural riparian forests overgrowing the riverbanks. Moreover, a very rare phenomenon occurs within the site - it is called regeneration succession, which allows rebuilding natural values of the site. The pravalley is also the habitat for over 100 bird species.

Location
The site is situated in Lodz voivodeship, within the communes of Bedlno, Krzyzanow, Kutno, Leczyca, Gora Swietej Malgorzaty, Grabow, Leczyca, Piatek, Swinice Warckie, Witonia, Lowicz, Bielawy, Domaniewice, Lowicz, Zduny, Dabie.

Landscape
The Bzura-Ner pravalley is a fragment of Warsaw-Berlin pravalley. The Warsaw-Berlin pravalley had been formed in Pleistocene by glacier moving back from the territory of Poland. This enormous concave form had been created by big rivers which were made form the melting glacier. The bottom of the pravalley is flat partly covered by fen plains. In the eastern part of the site the Bzura River flows and in the western part of the area Ner, Warta, Obra, Odra and Sprewa rivers flow on the territory of Germany.

Rivers
The Bzura river (166 km) is the left tributary of Vistula river. It flows along northern part of the Rownina Lowicko-Blonska. The waters of Bzura from its left side are streamed by Ochna and Sludwia, and from its right side by Moszczenica, Mroga, Struga, Bobrowka, Skierniewka, Rawka, Pisa, Sucha, Utrata rivers. The Ner river flows out near Wisniowa Mountain near the city of Lodz, and flows into Warta river near Majdany countryside. It is about 134 km long.

Ecosystem
The Bzura-Ner pravally is dominated by meadows and scrub communities and arable lands. The fens and transition mires, situated on peat deposits, cover the central part of the site. A very rare phenomenon occurs in the area of the habitat - it is called regeneration succession, which allows rebuilding natural riparian forests, reedbeds communities and ash-alder alluvial forests, by stopping agricultural activity. In some places you can also admire salt vegetation but vast area of the site is covered by mowing and arable meadows as well as big patches of sedge beds, reedbeds, riverine willow thickets and swamp alder woods.

Natura 2000 Program included under special protection important European habitats of:

  • riparian forests and riverine willow thickets;
  • lowland and mountain extensively used meadows;
  • old riverbeds and others euthrophic water bodies;
  • inland salt meadows;
  • calcerous fens;
  • transition mires and quaking bogs;
  • hard oligo-mesothrophic water bodies with benthic vegetation;
  • molinia meadows on calcerous, peaty or clavey-silt-laden soils.

Flora and fauna
Among flora and fauna of the site the most valuable plant species are endangered orchids like - Heat Spotted Orchid, Broad-leaved Marsh and Orchid, Orchid Palustris. Also vast water vegetation representation occurs in the site: European Common Twayblade, Yellow Pond Lilly, White Water Lilly, Marsh Pea and Senecio Paluster.
