Location
Niebieskie Zrodla is located on the Piotrowska plain, within Poludniowomazowieckie hills. The area is situated on the flood terrace of the Pilica river, near Tomaszow Mazowiecki.
History and Landscape
Strongly pulsating springs gush from calcareous ground about 80 liters per second. Cold, pure water is turquoise-colored and that is where the name of the area came from.
Ecosystem
It is a complex of karst springs with standing water areas formed by out-flowing channels. It is surrounded by riparian forest and brush communities as well as swamp alder woods. The water vegetation is rather poor in this area but the flora near land habitation counts about 400 species. The most interesting plants, which are worth to mention about are ferns: Southern Adderstongue, Crested Wood Fern, higher plants as well: Sweet Grass, Narrowleaf Bittercress, Dark - leave Willow. The most common trees which are in this area: Black Alder, White Poplar. White Willow, Laurel Willow and the most popular shrubs: Alder Buckthorn, Dogwood, Guelder Rose.
There are lots of Mallards' habitats in water reservoirs on this area, but there are also many rare species listed in Annex II of Birds' Directive: White stork, Common Kingfisher, Black Woodpecker, Bluethroat. A very perceptive observer can also spot Great Crested Newt and Daubenton's Bat (Water Bat).
Threats
The main threat to the nature values of the area is building-up its surroundings.
Nature conservation
This area was included to the European Network Natura 2000, as the Site of Community Importance. There is also a nature reserve called "Niebieskie Zrodla" where you can admire one of the most beautiful and the most interesting karst springs in Poland.
