Location
Lasy Spalskie are located in area of Wzniesienia Poludniowomazowieckie, in lodzkie voivodeship, on the area of Czerniewice, Inowodz, Lubochnia, Tomaszow Mazowiecki communes. They are listed within Natura 2000 program as a Site of Community Importance. They encompass are of 1970.0 ha. Lasy Spalskie refuge occupies suothern part of Spalski Landscape Park.
Ecosystem
Lasy Spalskie are remnants of historic Puszcza Pilicka (Pilicka Woods). There are very precious parts of old woods appear in vicinities of Spala, Konewka, Liciazna, Zadlowa Smardzewice places, you can find here specimens of over 200-year-old pines and oaks. Manly pine woods dominate here, smaller areas are occupied by mixed and decidous forests: ash-alder, oak-hornbeam, luminous oak and riverine forests. Border of fir and beech range runs across the refuge. The area is under special protection because of such valuable habitats occurrence as:
Flora
The refuge signifies with rich world of vegetation, many protected species connected with wood areas appear here. The most inetersting are: common polypody (Polypodium vulgare), Dentaria enneaphyllos, mezereon (Daphne mezereum), martagon lily (Lilium martagon), prince's pine (Chimaphila umbellata), yellow foxglove (Digitalis grandiflora), wild ginger (Asarum europaeum), Sucisella inflexa, wild orchid (Epipactis helloborine), royal helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens), Sweet grass (Hierochloe odorata) and many more.
Fauna
Entomofauna of Lasy Spalskie is unique, rare, wood Coleoptera species for exemple: hermit beetle, Pachnoda species, Sinodendron cylindricumi, Ergates faber, Necydalis major and Dicera moesta. Specimens of butterflies are also nteresting - Scarce Swallow-tail Butterfly (Papilio podalirius), Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machon), Large Copper (Lycaena dispar), poplar admiral (Limenitis populi). There is one of the most numerous bats' hibernating place in central Poland, in bunkers near Konewka spot. You may find here such species like: greater mose-eared bat, Bechstein's bat, and Barbastrelle. Lasy Spalskie are precious refuge for birds, many species of woodpeckers appear here (grey-headed, green, black and middle spotted), white and black stork, red-breasted flycatcher, bluethroat, common kingfisher, hoopoe, nutcracker. There is one of wisent husbandry centre in protection zone of Spalski Landscape Park in Ksiaze near Smardzewice place.
Nature Protection
There are many forms of nature protection on the area of the refuge. There is Spala reserve near Spala place, which protects river thickets, riverine oak-hornbeam forests and firs on the border of range. Specific natural value of the reserve are pendiculate oaks with circumferences 4-5 meters long and pines with circumferences over 2 meters long.
There are tracts unique luminous oak wood in Konewka reserve with very old specimens of 160-260-year-old tree stands of oaks.
Moreover the area is partialy in Spalski Landscape Park borders, Piliczansko-Radomszczanski Area of Protected Landscape and Promotional Forest Complex of Lasy Spalsko-Rogowskie.
