There are two small rivers preserving their natural values, vast low peatbogs and little remains of riparian forests in the Omulwia and Plodownica valley. The site is important European refuge of birds, because of lots of Corn crakes nesting there. You can also meet breeding European rollers and hundreds of Common cranes which stay there during their migration. Also Black Grouses occur in this area, the species disappearing in the whole country. The area of Special Protection Area (36568,6 ha) lies in Kurpiowska plain and is situated south-west of Ostroleka to Chorzel and Wielbarka The site includes the valley of the Omulew River which flows into Narew River with its main tributary Plodownica. more »
There is Ostroleka city on the eastern end of the refuge. The national road no. 53 leads there and it is also cut by road no. 61. The city is well prepared for tourists. There are hotels, bars and restaurants. The refuge borders with Chorzele city from its western side. more »
