The site includes the northern slope of the Kostrza hill, covered by broadleaved forest. The refuge was established to protect old natural maple forests and beech forest, where one can come across a protected fern species - Hart's-tongue Fern. Within Natura 2000 Network Kostrza is a site of community importance. The site covers the area of 38,6 ha and lies on the altitude of 550-720 m asl, on a slope of Kostrza hill, northward from Limanowa.
