The European tree frog is a small frog that can grow to 4,5 cm in size at most. The smooth, shining, usually leaf-green back and the white-yellowish to grey belly are separated by a dark stripe on its flank reaching from the nostrils, over the eye and the eardrum, to the groin, contrasting the green, and forming a dark spot near the hips. The hind legs are much larger and stronger than the fore legs, which enables to jump rapidly.
The Sand Lizard is distributed across most of Europe. Sand Lizards can reach up to 25cm in length. It is regarded as threatened and strictly protected under law.
The Common Toad (Bufo bufo) or European Toad is widespread throughout Europe, with the exception of Ireland and some Mediterranean islands. Adults can grow to 18 cm and their skin has a warty appearance and ranges from green to brown. As a defense against predators they secrete a toxic, foul tasting substance called bufagin.
The European Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina) is a fire-bellied toad native to mainland Europe. Its name derives from the brightly coloured red- or yellow-and-black patterns on its ventral region, which act as aposematic coloration, a warning to predators of the toads' reputedly foul taste. The other parts of the toads' skins have more neutral colours such as green or dark brown.
